Diesel generators: deliver dependable performance

A very common result of a natural disaster is the loss of power. These power outages can be long-standing and result in significant hardship on a homeowner. There can be a significant cost associated with the loss of power through the loss of perishable food items, pipes that burst due to freezing temperatures, flood damage in a basement due to the sump pump not working and alternative housing if the homeowner is forced to leave the home. A good alternative to that is to install a home generator system. The installation will need a building permit, and the location should be carefully planned to avoid the generator being damaged during another disaster, rendering it useless. In most cases the installation will be done in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

Protect your generator and its fuel tank from flooding and high winds. In flood hazard areas, mount the generator and tank securely on concrete platforms, above the expected flood level.

Install the generator and tank next to a building or protective structure to shield them from wind and windborne debris. Electrical and fuel supply lines must also be protected. And remember that your generator must be accessible for maintenance. Improperly installed generators can accidentally energized electricity onto power company lines and cause severe injuries or death to linemen working to restore power. Generators should be installed by qualified individuals and in accordance with power company regulations, building and electric codes to make sure the safety of power company personnel

Transfer power from the Generator to Your House

Generators rely on the principles of electromagnetism to produce electricity. Essentially, if two magnets are placed so that the opposite poles are adjacent to one another and a conductor is passed through the magnetic field between them, a voltage is generated within the conductor. The prime mover of the Generator set will be a diesel engine and the prime mover will be coupled to an alternator (single phase for small units). Generator sets of higher rating have to be started with battery starters. Diesel Generator sets of smaller rating can be started by cranking as well.

Large residential buildings need the use of backup generators in order to operate elevators, fire systems, and critical services during emergencies. However, these backup generators are usually made to operate independently of the building’s main electrical equipment, and must be separately activated in an emergency.

The technology exists today to tie these same systems into the main electrical system of the building, allowing them to serve the building loads during prolonged emergencies and during peak load hours. This not only helps to ease peak load, but also allows the building operator to recoup some of the cost of the backup generator by reducing power purchased at high rates and by potentially reducing peak power charges.

Choosing a location for your new diesel generator is generally straightforward, but there are factors you must consider. A good location is one that allows the generator to operate efficiently and safely without endangering the lives of people living in the house. Always install standby generators outdoors on stable ground that does not flood. The exhaust gases produced by a generator contain deadly carbon monoxide, and that is yet another consideration for location. Standard required clearances or guidelines include three feet from any wall, five feet from any house opening, three feet from flammable materials. Never locate the generator anyplace that might allow exhaust gases to accumulate, under a roof of any kind, or inside any kind of building.

Adpower has a complete range of portable generators designed for sales and rentals for construction, municipal, industrial, and mining applications. Increased concerns for environment are driving power plants to minimise their environmental footprint. Adpower offers established solutions for CO and NO emission reduction and control technologies for full and part load operation.

Add generators to your site to complete your needs

Diesel Generator set is used to generate electricity for meeting the electricity necessity of small establishments such as commercial buildings, Hotels, Telephone Exchange, Shops etc. when there is a power supply failure from the Electricity Board or other power supply undertakings. Different kinds of generators have different abilities to respond to changes in demand

The first criterion in selecting a generator should be the fuel type. If this is to be a summer-only application where the researcher is present, any fuel will do.

If the generator will need to be transported by hand across difficult terrain, a portable, gasoline-fired model is ideal since a lightweight model and easy-to-handle fuel takes priority. Regardless of the type of engine generator selected, it is wise to go with a reputable manufacturer. Inexpensive generators tend to have much poorer reliability and lower efficiencies than high-end models. They are also classically louder, have greater vibration, and produce a less stable voltage and frequency than premium units. If a generator suffers major damage, a replacement will be needed. In order to minimize downtime and production losses, we recommend that customers with larger fleets should keep replacement generators in store
Some common guidelines in case of generators include placing your generator where prevailing winds will blow the exhaust away from the home. Keep the generator away from bedrooms, living areas, and where the noise won’t bother your neighbours. All locations must be at least five feet away from openings such as windows, soffit vents, and doorways. Never locate the generator under an overhang, in a breezeway, or in recesses blocked by trees, shrubs or other vegetation. Avoid areas subject to snow drifts and save the generator from pets, animals, people, and traffic.

Installing the generators

The demand for autonomous power supplies has fuelled great competition among manufacturers of generators. This has led to advances in the technology and generally lower  prices, particularly in the portable generator market.

Adpower  diesel generators, suitable for all kinds of applications, have good randomness, long cycle lengths, and higher speed than other generators of similar quality. The chief  properties of diesel fuels are volatility, heating value, ignition quality number, viscosity, low-temperature flow, lubricity, storage stability, component compatibility, and sulphur content. The volatility of a diesel fuel has little influence on its engine performance, except as it affects exhaust smoking tendencies. The distillation range of a diesel fuel does not allow much flexibility in this regard, because of the interdependence with other specification factors. Because diesel fuels are classified as non flammable for freight purposes, minimum flash point restrictions are imposed

Generator  operators, railroad and shipping companies are concerned about kW output, and fuel economy. They aim to use the fuel with the greatest heating value. The factors that influence heating value are density and mid-boiling point. While installing the generators you should never back feed the electricity into your house by  plugging the generator into an outlet or wiring it directly to the panel box. If done incorrectly, you can electrocute utility workers repairing downed power lines. For safety's sake, it is strongly suggested that you hire an electrician to install a power transfer system to redistribute power from the generator to the circuit panel. A power transfer system basically contains a manual transfer switch, a power cord and an optional power inlet box. Your type of installation will help you determine if you need the power inlet box and the length of the cord.

If you’re main electric panel is located in your garage, this is the easiest and least expensive way to install a power transfer system. Your electrician simply connects a manual transfer switch to your main electrical panel. You don't need a power inlet box since you can run a power cord into the garage. Always run your generator outside of the garage to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. You'll need at least a 25-foot power cord to give you ample distance.

Diesel generators: Essential to the systems

The function of the diesel generators is to produce back up electrical supply to essential systems, to facilitate safe shutdown of the station in case of emergency.

Modern technology demands power. The operation of a generator is based on Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction. If a coil or winding is linked to a varying magnetic field, then electromotive force or voltage is induced across the coil. Thus, a generator has two necessary parts: one that creates a magnetic field and the other where the energy is induced. The magnetic field is characteristically generated by electromagnets. Every diesel genset will be slightly different due to the size and configuration of the major components. Proper sizing of the generator is crucial to the success of any installation and requires a good working knowledge of electricity and its characteristics, as well as the varying requirements of the electrical equipment comprising the load.

Each diesel generating set is provided with a Rating Label generally fixed to the base frame. This label contains the information required to identify the generating set and its operating characteristics. This information includes the model number, serial number, output characteristics such as voltage and frequency, output rating in kVA and kW, product date and weight. Before choosing a generator, check for municipal ordinances that may dictate requirements regarding placement of the unit (setback from building and/or lot line), electrical wiring, gas piping, fuel storage (for liquid propane or diesel tanks), sound and exhaust emissions.

For safety reasons, Adpower recommends that the backup power system be installed, serviced and repaired by an Adpower authorized service dealer or a competent, qualified electrician or installation technician who is familiar with applicable codes, standards and regulations. Adpower has years of experience which means that it can provide you with the right unit to achieve maximum efficiency and cost effectiveness for the task at hand.
